I’m keeping it short this week because we’re in the middle of moving Grampy to Portland and it’s a big change in our household.
One thing I love about writing this newsletter is that friends now send me articles highlighting play from all kinds of publications. This makes me happy because it means people I know and love are tuning into play, but also because the existence of the articles means the world is too.
I write this newsletter, not because I’m some play expert, but because I need regular reminders that play is even a thing. I need to constantly battle the gremlins of “right priorities” and “basic needs.”
Reading helps. Today I’m attaching a few links that are worth your while.
My friend Steph sent me this New York Times article (“How to Feel Alive Again”) about writer Katherine May. It’s delightful. Spoiler: play reminders on stickies. That’s your tiny assignment: write one simple activity you love on a stickie note. As always, it goes where you can see it. One day maybe we’ll make it into a consistent spiritual practice, but not yet.
This NPR article is simple: just have more fun. Shoutout to my friend Elizabeth, who was an excellent AWP room mate, and is writing a book on prepping for the apocalypse—maybe not in the way you’re used to thinking about it. Follow her journey here.
